However, during the time that you are in recovery, you need to make sure that your mouth is free of infection and the environment inside your mouth is healthy and stable. Otherwise, if you catch an infection, it would be a whole other misery as well. Therefore, it is important that you keep a sterilized mouth during the recovery. If you don’t know what precautions to follow after a dental recovery, then you must take a look below:

First of all, you must know that you shouldn’t rinse your mouth after a dental procedure. You should avoid rinsing for about 24 hours because it takes a lot of time for bleeding to stop after a dental procedure. However, after 24 hours, you can make a mixture of salt and lukewarm water and rinse your mouth with it. It would give you satisfaction and would allow your wound to heal quickly. Moreover, it would also remove the germs from your mouth. After you have rinsed the mouth, it may hurt for a little while but if you stay away from extensive eating, then the pain goes away quite quickly. As for tobacco, you should stay away from it for about 2 weeks or it would hinder your healing process. Moreover, if you had a major surgery, then you should also avoid using the brush for about a week or so as it can hurt your gums and would cause them to bleed. Many people complain of bad breath because they cannot clean their teeth so what you can do is to soak a q-tip in water and salt and clean your teeth with it instead. However, when you are cleaning your teeth, be careful not to touch the area where the surgery was performed.

Open your mouth to the extent it allows. If you find it difficult to open your whole mouth, then don’t. You don’t have to open your entire mouth. Dental procedure limits the mobility of your mouth while you gain back in a few weeks later so wait for the mobility to be regained.

Your dentist would cover your wound with a few stitches and then with gauze to stop the bleeding. After a week or so you can start eating but avoid the area of surgery and eat carefully, nothing should touch that area or there would be high chances of infection. No matter how much it irritates you, you have to be careful about it because it can make your gums bleed.

After a dental surgery, chances are that your gums would be swollen near the area of the wound. You must know that it is normal and you shouldn’t worry about anything. This swelling would go away with time so you would have to be patient. Although you may think that the swollen jaw would give you the unusual facial appearance you must tolerate it for some time. People would tell you to apply different things on the swollen area but you must not because it would result in the increase of swelling. However, you can place ice cubes on the swollen area to reduce the swelling. It would help you in restoring the jaw muscles and would also release a lot of pain that you must be experiencing.
